The World
Living Lines
The Living Lines are an ancient energy network that connects all Sanctuaries across the world. They:
- Regulate seasons and climate
- Guide species migrations
- Power Linkers (the player's bonding device)
- Maintain ecological balance between biomes
Living Lines are not visible to the naked eye in normal conditions. At convergence points — where multiple Lines intersect — unusual concentrations of energy create hidden locations: secret dungeons, rare spawn zones, and points of ecological significance. These points are visible on the map.
The Sanctuaries
Ten Sanctuaries were built by an ancient civilisation to anchor the Living Lines and regulate energy flow. Each is tied to:
- A specific region and biome
- A climate archetype
- A flux of natural energy
When a Sanctuary functions correctly, the region around it is climatically stable, migrations follow expected patterns, and Faerals in the area behave normally.
The Crisis
The Unchained have been systematically siphoning energy from the Sanctuaries to power their Resonator device. Without the Sanctuaries feeding the Living Lines, the global system has destabilised:
- Seasons are unpredictable and accelerated
- Earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions occur without warning
- Species migrate chaotically or not at all
- Mutations appear at abnormal rates
- Faerals exhibit aggressive behaviour
The world is not in ruins — but it is deteriorating. The crisis is slow enough that most people attribute it to natural variation. Dr. Theo Retical was the first to identify the Sanctuary siphoning as the cause.
Ecology
The ecosystem operates at population level, not individual level. Key dynamics:
- Predator/prey chains — species populations influence each other
- Biome compatibility — species have preferred temperature and humidity ranges
- Climate pressure — seasonal shifts push migrations
- Player pressure — overcapturing or overhunting a species reduces its local population
- Reintroduction — releasing Faerals restores local populations by revoking the link (setting the Faeral free)
