Characters
Dr. Theo Retical
Role: Mentor, scientist, mission giver
Delivery: Radio contact throughout the entire game
Name pun: Theo Retical = Theoretical (revealed when someone close to him uses his first name)
Personality
Eccentric but warm. Genuinely enthusiastic about the ecosystem and Faerals. Has a tendency to go on tangents about species he studied decades ago. Bad at fieldwork — he understands the theory perfectly but cannot execute in practice.
Role in the story
Theo was the first scientist to identify that Sanctuary siphoning was causing the ecological disruption. He spent years warning institutions, was largely ignored, and lost credibility in the process. He has the complete theory of what needs to be done, but no ability to do it himself.
So he recruits Linkees — gives them a Faeral, explains the situation, and maintains radio contact as they progress. He provides:
- Ecological context for what the player is observing
- Research Commissions (structured quests)
- Lore drops and narrative context between sanctuaries
- Warm, occasionally comic relief
Character arc
As the player restores Sanctuaries, Theo's previously dismissed theories are vindicated one by one. His relationship with the player grows from "recruiter of strangers" to genuine partnership.
The Player
A Linkee recruited by Dr. Theo Retical. Name is chosen by the player at the start. No fixed backstory — the player is one of many "fools" Theo sent out with a Faeral and a hope.
The player is framed as an archivist-ecologist-guardian: their role is to understand, document, influence, and preserve.
Ana Lysis (reserved)
Status: Not yet introduced — reserved for a future scientist NPC
Name pun: Ana Lysis = Analysis. Lysis is also a biology term (cell breakdown).
Personality concept: Methodical, field-present, obsessively data-driven. Where Theo theorises over radio, Ana is in the field logging everything. Her contrast with Theo — the theorist who can't act, the analyst who acts but questions everything — makes them a natural duo.
Do not introduce Ana until her role in the story is defined.
