The Codex

The Codex is the encyclopedic feature of the Linker, unlocked at the Sanctuary of Archives.

Before Archives is restored: the Linker shows basic Faeral data (HP, level, active abilities). No deep knowledge tracking.

After Archives: the Codex activates — full species knowledge base, ecological observation logs, and ability condition records.

What it contains

  • Bestiary — species entries, filling in as the player encounters and captures Faerals
  • Ecological Journal — log of world events (migrations, extinctions, anomalies, alerts)
  • Ability Records — condition snapshots logged when a special ability is first triggered

Ability condition logging

When a Faeral learns a special ability, the Codex logs a complete snapshot of the conditions at the moment of triggering:

CODEX ENTRY — Solar Erupt (Embralynx)
Logged conditions:
Time 12:47
Temperature 38°C
Weather Clear
Season Summer
Biome Volcanic Chain
Action Battle won
Player HP 74%
Opponent Frostwing (Ice)
Evo. stage Final

The player has no idea which condition was the trigger. All observable context is recorded. The community aggregates multiple data points to reverse-engineer the actual requirement.

The scientific discovery loop

  1. Observe — player learns a special ability under unknown conditions, Codex logs everything
  2. Share — community pools Codex entries for the same ability
  3. Hypothesise — players identify constants across multiple triggers
  4. Test — controlled attempts to isolate the variable
  5. Verify — confirmed conditions documented in community wikis

This loop is intentional. The Codex doesn't give you the answer. It gives you data.

Per-species conditions

The same special ability may have different trigger conditions depending on the species learning it. This means:

  • Community data for the same ability may appear to contradict (one species learns it at noon, another at midnight)
  • The eureka moment of realising conditions are species-specific is a genuine discovery event
  • Each species–ability combination has its own Codex entry

Bestiary entry structure

[Species Name]
Attributes: [list]
Biome: [preferred]
Climate: [temperature/humidity range]
Known abilities: [generic list] + [special: unlocked / ???]
Ecological notes: [filled by player observation and journal events]

Unknown special abilities show as ??? until first triggered by any Faeral of that species owned by the player.
